Garrett family papers, 1839-1904.

Collection consists entirely of photocopies of papers and memoirs mostly relating to the life of William Robertson Garrett of Giles County, Tennessee. Garrett served as an officer in the 11th Tennessee Cavalry during the Civil War and was also a distinguished educator. Included are photocopies of pictures of officers in Garrett's regiment. In addition, the collection includes a transcription of Cara Garrett's scrapbook that contains an obituary for William, a genealogy, and a description of the Garrett house. Other papers provide the details of Garrett's Civil War service and the positions he held as an educator in Tennessee. A genealogy of the Field family also shows William Garrett's relation to Thomas Jefferson and includes notes on other significant figures in the family. A short biography of William Garrett by Ruth B. Duncan is also included as well as a memoir of Mildred Ezell Reynolds that describes her family's activities during the Civil War, specifically the northern occupation and the activities of the Ku Klux Klan. Together, the collection provides useful source materials for the history of Giles County, Tennessee.
